Structured Composition 2 - When A Fire Broke Out At School

In this structured composition, you must imagine that a fire has broken out at your school. The day after the fire, your teacher has asked you to write an article about it for your school magazine. Please write at least 50 words for each of these sections.

First of all, tell me what the day was like before the fire broke out. Was it a perfectly normal day? What was the teacher teaching you in class when the fire alarm went off? How did you and the other children feel? Were you enjoying yourselves or bored out of your minds?

How did the class react when the fire alarm went off? Did anybody laugh? Scream? Start to chatter? Perhaps the children had never heard the fire alarm before. Had the class ever had a fire drill before?

More importantly, how did the teacher react? Did (s)he panic? Look worried? I bet some of the children got up out of their chairs. Did the teacher have to tell some children to sit back down?

What sort of things did you say to your friends? Were you frightened, puzzled, excited?

Of course, at some point, even the most panicky teacher will have to pull him or herself together and escort the class out onto the playing field. What was it like walking through the corridors? Could you see any flames? Did you smell any smoke? Did you hear any crackling noises?

Were you tempted to run? The teacher always says "Walk, don't run!" because they know that children are tempted to run to escape the burning building as quickly as possible.

The drill will be that all the children have to assemble in a safe place (usually on the playing field). Then the teacher of each class takes the register to make sure that all the children who came to school that morning are out of the building.

What happened on your playing field? Did all the children in your class manage to get out onto the field or did the teacher find that one or more of them were missing? Did someone (some hero) have to go back into the burning building to rescue the missing children?

Then the firemen arrive. What was the fire engine like? Describe what the firemen did to put out the fire, making your description as exciting as possible. How long did it take them to put it out?

When the fire is out, the firemen can go into the ruins to find out what happened. Did anybody die in the fire? (Perhaps a teacher or another pupil at the school that you don't like very much!) What did the firemen think had caused the fire?

Did any of the pupils present pose with the firemen for photographs? Did they let you ride in the fire engine? Also, what happens now about your schooling? Do you have to go to another school now (if your old one is in ruins) or do you have lessons in tents on the playing field?
